Qilin (麒麟)

 The description from Classic of Mountains and Seas

"海内昆仑之虚在西北,帝之下都。昆仑之虚方八百里,高万仞。上有木禾,长五寻,大五围。面有九井,以玉为槛,面有九门,门有开明兽守之,百神之所在。在八隅之岩,赤水之际,非仁羿莫能上冈之岩。"

The Ocean part of Kunlun Mountain is in the northwest. It is below the capital of the emperor. The size is 800 miles in radius and 10,000 meters high. On the top of the mountain is a rice grain that large like a tree. It is 150 cm high, and the thickness requires five people to hug. There are 9 wells on each side of Kunlun, and each well has a fence made of jade. There are also 9 gates on each side of Kunlun, and each gate is guarded by a mythical beast called enlightenment, which is also called Qilin. These gates are a place where many gods gather. They gathered among the small mountain called Bayu, next to a river called Chishui. Those who were not skilled as Yi could climb the mountain.

Spring and Autumn Annals(春秋)

“十有四年,春,西狩获麟。”

In the spring of the fourteenth year, a Qilin got hunter at west wilderness.

Erya(尔雅)

“磨(即麟),麋身,牛尾,一角。”

The Qilin has body of moose, tail of ox, and with a single horn.

Book of Song(宋书)

“麒麟者,仁兽也。牡曰麒,牝曰麟。麒麟是吉祥神宠,主太平、长寿。”

The Qilin is a kind animal. The Male Qilin is called Qi and the female Qilin is called Lin. It is an auspicious animal, and it represent peace and longevity.
