Fenghuang (凤凰)

The description from Classic of Mountains and Seas

“又东五百里,曰丹穴之山,其上多金玉。丹水出焉,而南流注于渤海。有鸟焉,其状如鸡,五采而文,名曰凤皇,首文曰德,翼文曰义,背文曰礼,膺文曰仁,腹文曰信。是鸟也,饮食自然,自歌自舞,见则天下安宁。”


In the mountain of Dan Cave, there are many golds and jades. The river called Danshui flows out, and the south stream flows into the Bohai Sea. There is a bird, its shape is like a chicken, its body is covered with five color patterns, and it is called Fenghuang.  On the head, there is a Chinese word that means moral(德). On the wings, the word is justice(义). On the back, the word is etiquette(礼). On the chest, the word is benevolence(仁). On the abdomen, the word is trust(信). It is a bird, eats naturally, sings and dances, sees the world will be peaceful.

Book of birds(禽经)

"凤雄凰雌。凤,鸿前,麟后,蛇首,鱼尾,龙纹,龟身,燕颔,鸡喙,骈翼。"

Feng is male, Huang is female. Its breast of a goose, the hindquarters of a stag, the neck of a snake, the tail of a fish, the forehead of a fowl, the down of a duck, the marks of a dragon, the back of a tortoise, the face of a swallow, and the beak of a cock.

Chuxueji(初学记)

"凤,火精。"

In the body of Phoenix, it contains the essence of the sun.

Compendium of Materia Medica(本草纲目)

“羽虫三百六十,凤为之长。”

In the 360 types of birds. Phoenix is the leader.
